Hōkū Awards Weekend “Magic Number” Contest

Anyone can play. Anyone could win…

The Hawai`i Academy of Recording Arts (HARA) rewards the greatest career achievements in the Hawai`i entertainment industry with a Lifetime Achievement Award. This contest is simple. You just need to be able to add and multiply, and you need to know a little about the history of the entertainment scene in Hawai`i and the Lifetime Achievement Awards. Do the nine math problems below to arrive at the “Magic Number.” The contestant with the response closest to the correct answer will win their choice of five of this year’s Hōkū Award-winning CDs from Hawaiian music online retailer Me Ke Aloha. Three runners up will receive copies of Raiatea’s latest CD, He Leo Huali, autographed by Raiatea.

You can use any resource you want to try to answer these questions. There is lots of Hōkū Award history on the internet, or you can listen to Ho`olohe Hou Radio all weekend long from May 28th through May 30th where our programming will offer clues to these answers. Good luck!

Here is the “Magic Number” quiz:

1. The creators of the style known as “exotica” have each been honored with Lifetime Achievement Awards. Add up the years in which they received their Lifetime Achievement Awards and divide by 2.
2. Lifetime Achievement Awards are often awarded to members of musical families – either together as a family or one-family-member-at-a-time over the years. Add up the number of Hawai`i’s musical families that have been honored with this award. (Remember: In this case “family” can be blood relatives or in-laws.)
3. Hawaiian music and the hula can hardly be separated from each other. Many hula masters are also accomplished musicians, singers, and composers. Add up the number of hula masters (or notable solo hula dancers) who have been honored with Lifetime Achievement Awards.
4. HARA recognizes the finest musicians from Hawai`i – not merely those who perform Hawaiian music. Add up the years in which prominent jazz artists from Hawai`i were honored with Lifetime Achievement Awards and divde by 2.
5. Few artists have been honored with Lifetime Achievement Awards twice – once as solo artists and again as members of groups/bands. Add up the number of artists that have been honored with this award twice and multiply by 2.
6. HARA has occasionally honored recording engineers with Lifetime Achievement Awards. Add up the number of engineers that have been honored with this award.
7. Three of the most important inventions of Hawai`i’s musicians are the `ukulele, the steel guitar, and the slack key guitar style. Add up the number of `ukulele players, steel guitarists, and slack key guitarists that have been honored with Lifetime Achievement Awards.
8. Comedy has its place in the local Hawai`i entertainment scene. Add up all the years in which a comedian was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award and divide by 2.
9. Finally, add all of your above answers to Questions 1 through 8 and then add the year in which only female artists were honored with Lifetime Achievement Awards.
